IFMA North Alabama

Microbrewery Tour - 07/21/2016

All 49 people attending the evening tour of the exciting Campus No. 805, formerly Stone Middle School, was in for a real treat!  The evening began at the Stone Event Center with heavy hors d'oeuvres from Silver Spoon Catering and a presentation on the Campus No. 805 development. The group then proceeded to visit the Straight to Ale and Yellowhammer Taprooms.

To tell the story of Huntsville’s Straight To Ale brewery, one has to confront a central theme of that story, no matter its legal status. Because if you ignore homebrewing, you completely miss the point. You see, although the law is rarely enforced, homebrewing isn’t legal in Alabama, one of just two states that outlaw the hobby. But that never deterred Straight To Ale co-owner and head brewer, Dan Perry, who started making his own beer in 1987. In fact, homebrewing is behind just about everything at Straight to Ale. Take the brewery’s name, for instance, which came to Perry at a homebrew festival in Chattanooga, TN. Southern rock band Drivin’ and Cryin’ was crooning their irreverent hit, “Straight To Hell,” “and I was drinkin’ beer and it just kind of went together,” Perry said. The Huntsville native named his homebrew shed “Straight To Ale,” and when it came time to sell his beer commercially, “we couldn’t come up with anything better, so we just went with that.”

Yellowhammer Brewing was opened in West Huntsville in 2010 by four guys who wanted to bring good, traditional beer to Alabama. The brewery has grown rapidly in recent years and in December of 2015, they moved to a new facility at Campus 805. But their mission has never varied. They are dedicated to providing premium ales and lagers, drawing on Belgian and German brewing traditions with a Southern interpretation. To make this possible, our Head Brewer seeks out the highest quality ingredients, whether importing candy syrup from Belgium or kaffir lime leaves from California. Yellowhammer beers can be found in many fine restaurants, taverns, groceries and craft beer stores across both Alabama and Tennessee.
